1. Construction Materials Laboratory

- The purposes of Construction Materials Laboratory are:

  • To educate undergraduate and postgraduate students, to facilitate these students in approaching to new techniques and technologies of not only Vietnam and around the world in the field of construction materials.
  • To do scientific research for the development, application and transfer of technology in the field of civil engineering, testing and inspection of construction materials and other practical needs.
  • To enhance international cooperation in the field of construction materials.
  • To improve the performance of existing machines and equipment for scientific research and productions in order to combine not only theory but also practice and thereby, to enhance the quality of education and training of the lecturers whose knowledge contribute to serve the society.

2. Abilities (human resources, lab equipment …)

2.1 Human resources

- There are currently 11 lecturers and researchers in Construction Materials Laboratory, Department of Construction Materials, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, including:

  • Associate Professor, Doctor of Engineering: 02
  • Doctor of Engineering: 04
  • Master of Engineering: 05, including 01 doctoral student

- The number of science and technology staffs working in the Construction Materials Laboratory is 11 people.

- There is only one laboratory manager.


2.2 Laboratory equipment

- At present, there are many equipment in the Construction Materials Laboratory for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate educations, scientific research, and international cooperation, under several categories of experiments in the field of civil engineering that have been carried out as follows:

  • Test of hydration of cement
  • Test of plastic shrinkage and drying shrinkage of concrete
  • Test of creep of concrete
  • Test of mortar bar length change exposed to sulfate solution
  • Test of chloride resistance in concrete
  • Test of corrosion of reinforced concrete
  • Test of compressive strength, flexural strength and tensile strengh of concrete (Figure 2)
  • Test of the compressive strength of cement-treated soil pile (Figure 3)
  • Test of rheology property of concrete
  • Test of adhesive property of mortar on the material matrix
  • Test of water permeability of concrete
  • Test of abrasion resistance of concrete
  • Test of physical properties of the aggregate

2.3. Science and technology fields at Construction Materials Laboratory

- The scientific basis of construction materials can be used for research and application in specialties of the Faculty of Civil Engineering including:

  • New construction materials
  • Materials for bridges, roads, and tunnels
  • Materials for constructions on soft soils


2.4 Functions and tasks of Construction Materials Laboratory

- To serve undergraduate education for the Construction Materials and all of the majors in the Faculty of Civil Engineering

- To support post-graduate education, to help graduate students and PhD students to carry out their research

- To support lecturers in Faculty of Civil Engineering to carry out scientific research and application from the university research project, the ministerial research project, the city reseach project to the state research project.

- To serve the key projects in the Mekong Delta

- To cooperate with international institutions in training programs and scientific cooperation

- To support the researchers and lecturers at research institutes and univeristies which need doing research and experiments

- To serve the construction businesses and production agencies for practical research


2.5 Teaching volume

- At present, all of the lecturers and researchers in Construction Materials Laboratory have taught the undergraduate students of construction material major and five majors in the Faculty of Civil Engineering such as:

  • Civil and industrial structures engineering
  • Bridge and highway engineering
  • Port and maritime engineering
  • Water resource engineering
  • Surveying and mapping engineering

and graduate students of following majors:

  • Civil and industrial structures engineering
  • Construcion on soft soils
  • Construction materials engineering
  • Bridge and tunnel engineering

- The teaching volume of experiments in Construction Materials Laboratory is very much. The number of students is very huge and the number of experimental subjects is 6 subjects/1200 students/year. Each semester, the number of groups and classes of Construction Materials Testing for specializations of the Construction Materials Department, for the whole courses in Faculty of Civil Engineering, for non-formal and informal classes at the university and in the locality are about 50 classes/groups. Moreover, every year, the number of undergraduate students, graduate students doing scientific research, and the fourth-year students doing research topics in this lab are about 60 students.

The current area of Construction Materials Laboratory is 600 m2. Figure 5 shows the layout of laboratory equipments and experiment tools.

4. Effectiveness and results of Construction Materials Laboratory

- Some fields of construction materials research have been carried out as follows:

  • Special concrete (high-performance concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete, self-compacting concrete, refractory concrete, light-weight concrete …)
  • Utilization of solid waste to produce construction materials
  • Corrosion and methods of anti-corrosion for construction
  • Lightweight materials for low cost housing in the Mekong Delta and suburban areas
  • Production technology of precast concrete
  • Mineral and chemical admixtures for cement and concrete technology
  • Solutions of advanced ceramic technology
  • Production technology of advanced compound stone
  • Soft-soil reinforcement materials and structural reinforcement materials.
  • Durability of construction materials


- Ability to collaborate research with domestic and international agencies

  • Construction Materials Laboratory can cooperate with the domestic and internation agencies (including univeristies, institutes, and companies) in teaching experiments related to construction materials and the other majors of civil engineering and doing research.
  • Construction Materials Laboratory is able to help agencies to test the properties of construction materials such as concrete, cement, steel, construction structures...
