Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering):
To be eligible for admission to the full-time undergraduate program, students have to take the National Entrance Examination. The examination is organized in July every year, in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects. On the average, 700 students who pass the examination will enroll the Faculty in September. All study courses are conducted on a credit-based system to which the regular full-time study program covers around four and a half years. For part-time study program, students may complete the requirements of the degree depending on their available time, either in daytime, evening or joint training classes. In addition, starting from 2004, there is a Talented Engineering Program specially designed for elite students. The seven major fields of study are:

Program title: Civil Engineering Structural Engineering

1. Program objectives: To train Civil Engineers in the field of structural engineering who have knowledge and skills to solve problems relating to design and construction of civil and industrial structures; have professional ethics and sufficient physical condition to serve for the industrialization and modernization of the country.

2. Learning outcomes:

Graduated students are expected to have upon graduation:

1.

An ability to apply generic knowledge of mathematics, science, and civil engineering

2.

An ability to design, conduct and interpret for experiments in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction materials, surveying and water resources

3.

An ability to design and build a structure in practice, with full aware of economical, social, and environmental effects, also professional ethics, public health and safety, feasibility and sustainability.

4.

An ability to work as a successful team member on multi-tasking and multi-disciplinary issues

5.

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve civil engineering problems

6.

An ability to understand and practice professional responsibilities and ethics

7.

An ability to communicate effectively, with minimum level of English of TOEIC 450

8.

An ability to recognize and apply knowledge to solve structural engineering issues in a global, economic, environmental, and social context

9.

An ability to recognize the needs and motivation to engage in life-long learning

10.

An ability to apply knowledge of current and contemporary issues

11.

An ability to use the methods, skills, and modern engineering tools required for structural engineering practice

 

3. Admission criteria

After passing the National Entrance Examination to be admitted to the FCE, the student in the second year needs to apply for the Structural Engineering program and will be considered mainly based on her/his performance during the first year. The Honors courses open this time to elite students having GPA over 7.0.

4. Program structure

The curriculum includes 151 credits which can be accumulated in 4.5 years on average. There are two main semesters in which each semester lasts 18 weeks (including 2 weeks for midterm exams and 2 weeks for final exams) and a summer semester of 10 weeks. Each student needs to cumulate at least 14 credits per semester on average, and taking courses in summer semesters is possible. The student also can register for audit classes to shorten study period. Technical practice and internship programs are normally arranged during summer. In the final semester, students have to fulfill a thesis that relating to design a real construction project.

Students are assessed based on a 10-score scale. In order to graduate, students have to complete all required courses, with score of at least 5. Students are ranked based on their accumulated GPA, as in following table:

5. Strategies for learning, teaching and assessment:

Active learning together with problem-based learning strategies are considered in implementing the program. Syllabi and requirements for each course are published on the course website. The Library, Labs, and workshops are available for  self-learning. In each course description, the detailed syllabus, methodologies, and requirements to complete the course are explicitly given. The assessment aims to properly measure the students comprehension during the study, through a board range of methods such as individual/group assignments, practical exercises, seminar reports, mid-term examination, projects, and final examination. The final score is in the range from 0.0 to 10.0 in which below 5.0 is of failure. Besides, students are encouraged to participate in scientific research and technology transfer activities in the Faculty.

6. Support for students during the study

Homeroom teachers are provided to directly guide students in academic issues. In addition, E-learning tools are available which enable self-learning in everywhere, anytime, and lifelong learning. The students also establish the Web forum to exchange academic information as well as address their opinions to the faculty and university.

In our FCE, the students can access a Computation Center of more than 40 wireless equipped computers. The Labs and workshops are open for students to acquire integrated and experience learning as well as to practice their skills by doing project works, research projects, and experiments.

The university library with abundance, variety, and up-to-date information sources meeting the demand of readers and all academic programs is a good place to provide materials and information for students. At the library students can also access and retrieve materials from central library of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh where stores a huge amount of study and research materials among universities in Vietnam.

During the study, the students have opportunities to meet up the construction industry via seminar/conferences organized by the Faculty, or field trips, and internship. From such opportunities, the students may gain better understanding on real working environments.
